Roof terraces
Among the rooftops of the center, terraces and altane (traditional rooftop decks) are exposed to full sun. Made-to-measure planters, shade, heat-tolerant plants and automatic irrigation make them livable even in summer.
In Bologna, private gardens are found on terraces among the red rooftops of the historic center, in the courtyards of old palazzi and around the houses in the hills. We design made-to-measure outdoor spaces, with plants that can handle very hot summers and cold winters, and follow every project from the first site visit through to construction.
Book a site visitBologna has a climate of contrasts: very hot, muggy summers and cold, often foggy winters. In the center, private greenery is mostly up on terraces or tucked into courtyards, while in the hills south of the city gardens open onto slopes with soils that are often clay-rich.
That is why we work first of all on shade and heat tolerance, choosing plants that can take the summer and an irrigation system adjusted by season. In the hills we focus on drainage and terracing; in courtyards we favor shade-loving species and texture.
We follow projects in Bologna by traveling from our studios: site visit, design, our presence on site at the key stages and a maintenance plan.
Roberto Landello is a garden designer with studios in Lignano Sabbiadoro and Monza. We take on garden and terrace projects in Bologna and its province too, organizing the work in stages: site visit, design, our presence on site at the key moments and a long-term maintenance plan.
Our work starts with plants. Roberto grew up in his family’s nursery in Lignano Sabbiadoro and trained at the Scuola Agraria del Parco di Monza; Luca, our technical lead, combines a background in construction with training in agronomy and arboriculture.
We bring to Bologna the experience we have built up on terraces and rooftop gardens, which are the largest part of our work. In 2017 our installation “Ciclicità lunare” won the Foglia d’Oro del Lago di Como award at Orticolario, and our projects have been featured in Gardenia, Casa in Fiore and Terrazzi e balconi.

In the hills above Bologna the garden spreads across sloping ground and opens onto the city. Terracing and paths make it livable.
Behind the porticoes lie courtyards that are often shady. We choose plants for shade and partial shade and work on materials and proportions.
The garden around the house: shaded areas, places to spend time together and borders that need less water.
What clients ask us most often before starting a project.
Species that tolerate full sun and prolonged heat, many of them Mediterranean in origin, together with plants that are tough against winter cold. An irrigation system adjusted by season does the rest.
With well-designed shade, planted pergolas or awnings, heat-tolerant plants and light-colored materials that don’t store heat.
Yes. On sloping ground we work with terracing, low walls and good drainage, especially where the soil is clay.
We organize the work in stages: site visit, design, our presence on site at the key moments and scheduled maintenance.
It depends on the work and the area: in the historic center, pergolas and roofing may require permits. We discuss this at our very first meeting.
With a first contact and a site visit: we look at the space and its exposure, talk about what you need, and take measurements and photos for the preliminary design.
